Description Tassel rue (Trautvetteria carolinensis)—also known as tassel-rue, Carolina bugbane, and false bugbane—is a clump-forming perennial to about 3 feet tall, with deeply lobed, rich green leaves and upright stems topped with tassel-like, white tufts through much of the summer. Once you get it established, it can spread slowly by short rhizomes to form a handsome, mid-height groundcover. The species is native mainly to parts of the eastern and western United States; these seeds are from a Virginia ecotype. Partial to full shade; best in evenly moist soil but can adapt to average, well-drained soil. Perennial; Zones 5 to 8. Collected in October 2025. At least 15 seeds. VA ecotype.
