Germination Information: I recommend these only for adventurous gardeners who have experience with seeds that benefit from or require a chilling period. One approach is to surface-sow the seeds in a pot in fall to early winter, setting them outdoors in a spot protected from mice so they can get a natural chilling period and then germinate when conditions are right in spring. (The winter-sowing technique works great for these.) If you sow after January, consider giving the pot an artificial chilling period of about 2 months. I’ve read that it’s possible that these seeds could germinate (though perhaps at a less than optimal percentage) if you sow them in warm, moist, bright conditions, but I haven’t yet tried that myself and can’t provide first-hand advice. If you attempt that route and no seedlings appear after a month or so, then try the artificial chilling period. However you sow, keep in mind that many of the seedlings are likely to be solid green. You’ll be able to tell which ones are variegated while they’re still quite small, with just a few true leaves. I usually discard the plain green ones, but you could plant them if you have space to fill, or share them with friends; the straight species is still very pretty and fantastic for pollinators. Note that this information will not be on the seed packet you receive. Please read the description as well before ordering.
